Adult Courses @ The Sustainability Centre
The Sustainability Centre Runs a variety of courses for adults ranging from ‘Hedge Laying’ to ‘Apple Pressing’. You will find something for everybody. For full course descriptions click here.

Course Information

Most courses run from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm each day at the Centre.

Residential (R) courses includes the price of the course, accommodation, breakfast and a packaged lunch for each day of the course. Hostel places are available on a first come first served basis.

Non Residential (N-R) courses include the price of the course only.

If there are insufficient numbers courses will be canceled with a full refund

If you need to cancel your booking please do so at least 2 weeks before the event and we can provide a full refund. For cases where we receive less than 2 weeks notice, we shall try and fill your place and if successful you will receive a refund less a 15% administration charge. If we cannot fill your place you will not receive a refund

Shingle Making (1)
Saturday 1st March With Darren Hammerton
Discover the art of shingle making using traditional methods & hand tools. Students will learn the importance of selecting suitable material, how to cleave oak & sweet chestnut shingles from rounds of wood with confidence. Finally learn how to dress the shingle using the side axe, draw knife & shaving horse.

Focusing on the benefits of using wood chip as fuel & the opportunities it provides for woodland managers & owners. Topics covered will include the potential applications for wood chip, an introduction to the equipment used, managing the woodland resource, the economic & environmental benefits of wood fuel. other options for wood fuel including pellet & log systems. Learn & practice the skilled techniques of using a variety of traditional hand tools such as the saw, froe, side axe, drawknife, shaving horse, whittling knife & stock knife. Safely using an axe & saw, you will select & fell a sycamore. Then cut & cleave appropriate material for you to cut, carve & chop into its final form. After two days you will take home your own froe club, maul, spoons, spatulas & tent pegs all made without using any power tools!

Learn medieval & modern framing techniques to gain a broad perspective & understanding of the medieval box frame construction. Using traditional methods & hand tools you will learn the basic skills of timber selection, lay ups & levelling, scribing, joint cutting. Practice tool techniques, maintenance & safety. A practical weekend of scribing & cutting a typical mortice & tenon joint, draw bore & assemble with a cleft oak framing peg.

Sustainable Construction & Renewable Energy (13)

This course is an introduction to sustainable construction & renewable energy for dwellings. Topics covered will include legislation & the code for sustainable homes; sustainable construction covering mainstream construction methods; renewable energy such as biomass boilers, ground source heat pumps, water source heat pumps, solar, turbines, rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling & reed bed water treatment.

Well come along & learn how to press & pasteurise apple juice, the different method of press & crush for fresh apple juice & the all-important home made fresh cider the traditional way! Discover the classical seasonal apple harvest, early, mid & late & localised varieties, plus information for acquiring fruit pressing & preserving equipment. Learn how to make your own traditional chestnut gate hurdle & woven hazel hurdle. Using different techniques & tools you will learn how to cleave poles & rods. You will learn the techniques to shape & fashion your chestnut poles with a shave horse, draw knife, side axe, auger turgbill. Then using a billhook & the technique of twisting you will produce a solid wattle hurdle from the hazel rods. Hurdles & knowledge for you to take home!
